Blast heard and felt over a huge area because of atmospheric conditions

People have reported hearing and feeling this explosion over a very large area. Weather forecaster on BBC explaining that this was because of inversion layer in atmosphere (layer of warmer air sitting above colder air at ground level) preventing sound and blast wave from dissipating upwards and so focusing it horizontally instead, with the result that it travelled much further than it might otherwise have done.
